Pharmacy distribution on wheels: traceability first.
Distributing to pharmacies is distribution with the stakes raised: every unit must be traceable by batch from supplier to shelf, expiry is regulated rather than merely expensive, and a recall must be answered in minutes. Here is how field distribution works when the product is medicine.
1Why pharmacy routes are different
A snack sold from the wrong batch is a shrug; a medicine sold from the wrong batch is a liability. Pharmacy distribution operates in a regulated environment where batch numbers, expiry dates and complete distribution records are expected as a matter of course. The route model is often a hybrid — pre-sold orders delivered on schedule (closer to DSD) plus van-based top-up for OTC and fast movers — but the non-negotiable is the same: full traceability, every unit, every stop.
2Batch traceability, end to end
Traceability means one question answered instantly: which batches of which products went to which customers, when, on which invoices? That requires batch capture at goods receipt, batch recorded on every pick and every van sale, and batch printed on the invoice. When it works, a recall is a filtered report and a pickup list. When it does not, a recall is phone calls and fear.
3Expiry as a compliance line
Short-dated stock in pharma is not just wastage risk — supplying it can breach customer policies. The system should enforce FEFO, block sales within configurable expiry windows, and give the purchasing team a forward view of what will expire so it can be returned to suppliers in time where agreements allow.
4Invoice accuracy and audit-ready records
Pharmacies reconcile deliveries strictly; wrong-quantity invoices become credit-note churn and strained relationships. Scan-verified picking, quantities confirmed at the door and sequence-controlled VAT invoices keep documents matching reality — which is also exactly what an audit wants to see.
5How SynTrack serves pharmacy distributors
